What is Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome?
Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) is a rare inherited disease, named after two doctors in Czechoslovakia who, in 1959, recognized similar health conditions in two unrelated adults.Since the discovery of HPS, the condition has occurred all over the world but is most common in Puerto Rico.The most common health conditions with HPS are albinism, the tendency to bleed easily, and pulmonary fibrosis.To date, there have been eight different genes identified (HPS1HPS8).

Our nation is changing people.В  For example, white infants are on the verge of being displaced as the majority of newborns now that nearly half of babies in the USA are ethnic and racial minorities.You think that doesn’t scare the pants off the Tea Party.В  According to a story in USA Today:Only 50.2% of babies under age 1 are white and not Hispanic, according to the 2010 Census a sharp decline from 57.6% just 10 years earlier.»

It's COLD up here.We were supposed to have driven the RV up here to visit friends and family on our way to the Sunflower State but, after giving that some serious thought and checking out last-minute ticket prices on line, we opted to fly up instead.Actually, some of us opted to fly.MacGyver, given the fact that it's been 2+ years since he last set foot in a cockpit and given the fact that he's going to have to hit the ground running (to the cockpit) once we arrive, opted to stay home and bury himself in the -10, the 5&9, and the MTP checklist/handbook that he has.Saved us wear and tear on the RV, 20+ hours of hard driving, and really only cost us about $150 more than driving up would have cost.


All in all, I think it was a wise decision.


So the kids and I are visiting while MacGyver studies.We're freezing while he bakes.It's chilly up here, even when it's warm.And SoCal is still experiencing quite a heatwave.One of the first things we did when we arrived was go SHOPPING.My poor children only had shorts and T shirts.So we hit up Kohl's, Target, and Fred Meyer.Oh, how I have MISSED Fred Meyer.During our time in Alaska, that and Sam's Club were the only evidence that civilization existed in Fairbanks.I spent many an hour with my baby girl in Fred's in Alaska.


Today we hit the Point Defiance Zoo with the cousins and had a great time!We've missed them and it's always good to reconnect with family.I did not bring a camera on this excursion so I don't really have pictures to post.The zoo was nice - the setting was gorgeous.And the fog burned off nicely to the point where I could actually say I was warm!Tomorrow is supposed to be even nicer!


I had to resist the urge to buy The Boy a Carhartt jacket.It was a great jacket and I had forgotten how much I love Carhartts.They are a staple in Alaska.But I couldn't justify spending $75 on a jacket for a 7 year old boy.So I didn't.It's very possible that we might wind up living over this way in the future so I'll think about it if and when that happens.


It's been great to hang with old friends here.It's a lot like going home.It was so hard to say goodbye to them in February so it's wonderful to be with them again.Almost like we're back in Hawaii, hanging out as usual.And it won't be AS hard to say goodbye to them this go-round because we'll be back in a few months for Christmas.So I'm not dreading it quite as much.


I'd write more but there is a Tempurpedic mattress along with a warm blanket calling my name.So I'm out!

Great Recession Hurting U.S. High Tech Exports

U.S.exports of advanced technology products (ATP) fared better than other non-advanced technology exports during the recent U.S.recession, says a new report from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

NSF's National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics reports that ATP exports fell from $270 billion in 2008 to $245 billion in 2009. But this 9 percent drop was less than half the decline of non ATP exports.

Advanced technology products exports embody new or leading edge breakthroughs in science and technology including drugs developed from gene therapy, nuclear resonance imaging, micro integrated circuits, robotics, advanced materials, and civilian and military satellites.Exports of these products declined 9 percent in 2009 as compared to 2008.

ATP exports embody new or leading edge breakthroughs in science and technology including drugs developed from gene therapy, nuclear resonance imaging, micro integrated circuits, robotics, advanced materials, and civilian and military satellites.

The finding results from U.S.Census Bureau data taken from ATP trade in the 10 ATP technology areas defined by the agency with a focus on four technology areas: aerospace, electronics, information and communications technology and life science. Together these four areas account for 85 percent of U.S.ATP exports in 2010.

NSF's report, titled "U.S.Exports of Advanced Technology Products Declined Less Than Other U.S.Exports in 2009," also says U.S.ATP exports recovered in 2010 but lagged behind the growth of non-ATP exports.In 2010, U.S.ATP exports improved by 11 percent as compared to 2009, but other types of U.S.exports expanded at 23 percent, twice the rate of ATP exports.

The InfoBrief also describes U.S.ATP trade with selected major economies and regions.It says the 2009 decline of US ATP exports was steeper for Asia as compared to those destined for the European Union and the North American Free Trade Agreement zone.

Exports to Asia fell from $94 billion in 2008 to $79 billion in 2009; at 15 percent, it was the largest decline among the three regions.According to NSF's report, the decline was driven by a drop in electronics exports to Asia, the most important export market for U.S.advanced technology products, and a drop in information and communications technology exports.

During the period of 2008-2009, U.S.ATP exports to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan declined steeply (between 19 and 29 percent), but exports to China saw little change.In 2010, however, US exports to Asia grew faster than US exports to the other two regions.

Beautiful art is an open doorway to God, pope says at audience

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy (CNS) Appreciating beautiful works of art is not just for cultural enrichment, it’s also an important way to experience God and become aware of the human thirst for the infinite, Pope Benedict XVI said.

A sculpture, a painting, a poem or a piece of music can arouse a feeling of joy when it becomes apparent it is something more than just a chunk of marble, a canvas covered with colors, or words or notes on a page, he said.

«It’s something bigger, something that speaks and touches your heart; it carries a message and lifts the spirit,» he said Aug.31 as he held his weekly general audience in the town square at Castel Gandolfo.

«Art is like an open doorway to the infinite, toward a beauty and truth that go beyond everyday reality,» he told some 3,000 visitors and pilgrims present for the audience.

The pope continued a series of talks on the importance of prayer and the need to set aside some time in one’s busy day for God.

One way people can sense God’s presence or strengthen their relationship with him is through beautiful art, he said.

An artist is often trying to discover the true or deeper meaning of reality through «a language of forms, colors and sounds,» he said.

«Art can express and render visible humanity’s need to go beyond what one sees, revealing a thirst and quest for the infinitive.

«Art can open the mind’s eye and one’s heart, pushing us upward» toward the heavens, he said.

The «true paths toward God» that inspire prayer and strengthen one’s relationship with God, the pope said, are works of art that express the faith and spring from the artist’s own faith in God.

Pope Benedict praised the Jewish artist Marc Chagall, who created a large series of illustrations of the Bible, which the Russian-French artist called «the greatest source of poetry of all time.»

The pope also fondly recalled his attendance at a 1981 Munich concert of Leonard Bernstein conducting music by Johann Sebastian Bach.

When the last note of Bach’s cantatas was played «I felt, not out of reasoning, but deep in my heart, that what we had listened to had given me something of the great composer’s faith, and it compelled me to praise and thank the Lord,» the pope said.

He said he also turned to Lutheran Bishop Johannes Hanselmann, who was sitting next to him, and they both agreed that «Anyone who has heard this knows that the faith is true.»

The pope also recalled how sacred music had the power to convert the French poet, dramatist and diplomat Paul Claudel who, though he was raised Catholic, had turned away from the faith.

Claudel had gone to church one Christmas in Paris’ Basilica of Notre Dame to argue with those gathered there, but, instead, when he heard the choir chant the «Magnificat,» he felt God’s presence and became devoutly Catholic, the pope said.

The pope invited everyone to take advantage of the numerous works of art and architecture that «express the faith and call us to a relationship with God.»

He asked that museum-hopping «not just be an occasion for cultural enrichment, but be able to become a moment of grace, a motivation to strengthen our ties and dialogue with the Lord, to stop and contemplate the ray of beauty that strikes us almost wounding us deep inside and invites us to rise up toward God.»

Later that day at the papal villa, the pope was treated to a concert in his honor by Italian Cardinal Domenico Bartolucci, a composer and former director of the Sistine Chapel Choir.

Three soloists, a chamber choir and a philharmonic orchestra were to perform four works composed by Cardinal Bartolucci, including a new work titled «Benedictus» for soprano, chorus and orchestra; it was composed specifically for the Aug.31 event.
